To enrol in operate breathing apparatus training, participants must meet the following entry requirements:

  • Identification: Provide valid photographic identification (Photo ID) that is not expired.
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI): Must provide a valid Unique Student Identifier.
  • English language: Participants must have a strong command of the English language, to understand training resources, complete required documentation, communicate effectively, and undertake written and practical assessments.
  • Physical capability: Must be physically capable of safely undertaking the practical training and assessment.
  • Safety requirements: Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, identify workplace hazards, and comply with relevant safety procedures.
  • Clothing and footwear: Must wear appropriate clothing and safety boots during practical training and assessment.
  • Support needs: Participants who require additional support should discuss their needs with Daysafe Training before training commences.

Training pre-requisites 

  • Participants must be clean shaven

The course comprises online learning, a written theory assessment, and a practical assessment. Participants must have a strong command of the English language to understand the course content, follow safety instructions, and successfully complete the written theory assessment.

This course covers the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as defined by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.

This unit of competency applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus because they are working:

  • in a confined space
  • with hazardous gases/vapours
  • in an oxygen deficient atmosphere
  • in other situations requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.

This course applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and working in liaison with other shift team members and the control room operator, as appropriate.

The course involves the skills and knowledge required to select, don, operate and maintain breathing apparatus equipment in a hazardous atmosphere. It includes conducting pre-donning checks and tests of breathing apparatus; donning and checking of breathing apparatus; operating breathing apparatus and concluding breathing apparatus operations.

Operators may also be required to wear breathing apparatus in emergency situations, however, this is not the prime focus of this course.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Online Learning: The theory part of this course is completed online, using any device with an internet connection, including a smart phone or tablet. The online learning must be completed prior to attending the practical session.

Practical & Final Theory Assessment: After completing the Online-Learning Modules, students will attend the practical session on the date and time as selected during booking.

Upon successfully completing the training, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued by Daysafe Training.
